Constellations to Composition is Arizona Philharmonic’s 2019-2020 outreach collaboration with the Jim and Linda Lee Planetarium and Prescott Unified School District. Nine classes of PUSD third and six graders participated in this program.
Each class visited the planetarium show to view a show created by Planetarium Coordinator Eric Edelman for this project. They studied the animals and constellations and selected an inspiration for their composition. In workshops with Arizona Philharmonic representatives, the students learned of the orchestra and its music. With careful guidance, each group then composed a short orchestral work while hearing immediate playback from a computer.
Prior to the cancellation of public events due to COVID-19 concerns, we had expected that the student pieces would be used as background audio for a new planetarium show written by Eric Edelman’s team and presented in Summer 2020. Likewise, we had planned for some of the music to be selected by Maestro Peter Bay to be edited and prepared for orchestral performance on our May 24, 2020 Arizona Philharmonic concert at Yavapai College. For now, those plans are on hold.
